The King’s Man has been officially postponed until August 2021 by Disney and the 20th Century. In 2014, with the release of Kingsman: The Secret Service. Which starred Taron Egerton as Eggsy, Matthew Vaughn launched the Kingsman franchise.
The movie was a sleeper success and encouraged Fox to produce a sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle. And to begin to build plans for a larger franchise. He created a franchise prequel centered on the history of the Kingsman organization. In addition to Vaughn’s work on Kingsman 3.
Prior to the Disney-Fox merger becoming official in early 2019, The King’s Man was made. But it has yet to be released in theaters. Originally, Disney postponed the film while they worked out how to combine the releases of the 20th century. With their own and avoid competing directly with themselves. This finally pushed The King’s Man to 2020, but owing to the coronavirus pandemic, it was postponed again. With the expectation that COVID-19 will be largely behind the globe. And theaters will be fully operational, Disney postponed the prequel to early 2021.
Disney has agreed to postpone The King’s Man once again with the pandemic still underway, per Variety. The Kingsman prequel will now be released on August 20, 2021, instead of entering theatres on March 12, 2021. Now, the five-month wait means that The King’s Man will be released almost two years after its initial release date of November 2019.
As Disney and the rest of Hollywood transfer their releases out of the spring and early summer. This new wait for The King’s Man arrives. Recently, Sony postponed several films and MGM agreed to transfer No Time To Die to October 2021. Before May, Disney still has two movies planned to be in theaters. But both Nomadland and Raya and the Last Dragon have confirmed deals for streaming as well. Disney seems to be more comfortable delaying The King’s Man again. Rather than potentially considering the movie as a streaming release of its own.
It will be interesting to see just how good it proves to be by the time The King’s Man eventually comes out. The first two Kingsman films made about $400 million worldwide, but no known characters are featured in The King’s Man. Ralph Fiennes is a fairly recognizable star and there was some excitement created by the marketing materials previously published.
Since the audience is having to wait so long for The King’s Man now. There’s no telling whether there’s still any interest in it. Beyond the prequel, Vaughn has bigger ambitions for the Kingsman franchise. So he’ll need the latest movie to be a success to get the TV shows, sequels, and spinoffs he’s producing off the ground.
