Veteran Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee has died at the age of 85. His more than a month-long battle finally came to an end on November 15.
”He is on different life support systems. It seems that our almost 40 days’ fight is not enough to make him well. His situation is really grave and critical,” one of the doctors treating him had said.
As per his doctors, there was very little activity in the brain since Friday. His kidneys were also not functioning well.
He had been admitted to a private hospital on October 6 in Kolkata after he tested positive for Coronavirus. However, he later tested negative for the virus but other complications came up.
The news of Soumitra Chatterjee’s death has put everyone to shock and grief. “He made immense contribution to the craft of acting,” President Kovind wrote on twitter.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, ”Shri Soumitra Chatterjee’s death is a colossal loss to the world of cinema, cultural life of West Bengal and India. Anguished by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers”
Soumitra Chatterjee was called as Satyajit Ray’s one man stock company. Ray’s wife, Bijoya Ray had mentioned in her memoir, ”If Soumitra made a request, he could never say no. Once Soumitra came with a request for a friend. They wanted him to do a cover for a literary magazine. For as long as he(Ray) lived, he designed the cover for that magazine.”
